This corner hammock (meant to hang in the.. corner.. of a cage) is one of the easiest to make, and it looks fantastic! Remember, the sizes that I give can always be changed to create a hammock that fits your personal needs.
What you will need to sew this hammock (all measurements given in inches):
- Standard sewing apparatus (sewing machine, scissors, thread, measuring device, etc)
- 26" long x 13" high triangular piece of fabric
- 26" long x 13" high triangular piece of fleece
- 3 grommets
The trickiest part of this hammock is measuring it. Follow these simple steps and you'll have no trouble at all!
Begin by measuring a 26" length across the edge of your fabric. Make a mark on the fabric at the beginning (0") and at the end (26"). Also make a mark at 13", the halfway point! Now you want to measure 13" straight up from the halfway point and make a mark there. Now, using your straightedge, draw a line from each end point (0" and 26") to the 13" mark (not the center mark, the one that you drew straight up from the center). You now have.. a triangle. If you look at the picture above you'll see what I mean ^_^
Tip: You can easily make another size of hammock by simply making a mark wherever the center of your edge is, and then measuring that same distance up. Another common size that I make is 20" along the edge, with a mark at 10" and measured 10" straight up. Feel free to play around with the sizing until you find one that is perfect for your cage and number of rats!
Cut both of your fabrics this way and pin them together, right sides together.
Now you just stitch around the edge as you would any hammock, making sure to leave a space to turn the hammock right-side out. Trim the edges (outside the seam), invert the hammock and slip-stitch the hole closed!
Put a grommet in each corner of the hammock, hang, and enjoy!
